Air Conditioning For Early Galaxy

Due to my ever increasing family (2 year old, one year old, another on the way) and my major shortage of funds, I have just bought a 1995 Galaxy 2.0 GLX. The one glaring ommission from the spec on this vehicle is air conditioning. Does anybody know if it is possible/feasible to fit air conditioning (maybe a transplant from another Galaxy) and how much it would cost? If anybody out there has done this, I would appreciate hearing about your experiences.

Thanks for the quick reply - I was hoping for a more positive response but you can't have everything can you :P

 

I am picking the Galaxy up on Friday (bought it at the weekend and it's getting a few jobs done before we pick it up). I guess I'll see what it's like without aircon in the meantime. Anybody got any opinion on how closely it will resemble a greenhouse in the summer? (PS - my Galaxy is a dark metallic blue (read "Heat Magnet"))

A Galaxy without aircon in the summer doesn't bare thinking about. There are lots of companies that do aftermarket aircon and a good job they do too. It would probably be cheaper to sell the Gal you've got and buy another with it already on.

Oh if only it were that simple!!! Money (or lack of) was a major influence in my/our decision to purchase this model. I can only hope for a summer like the one we had last year (do you remember that day!!!). It does have a sunroof though (not much of a bonus, but better than nothing)

The Galaxy was not designed for the factory-fit aircon system to be retro-fitted (unlike some other vehicles....). You could try independent specialists - eg used to be Alpine-air.

WIth sunroof fitted, may just be cheaper to always park in the shade if you can, then open all windows and the 'roof for a couple of minutes after returning to parked car, to allow worst of heat to escpae before you get in.

I was facing this same problem when I bought our van this time last year. We got through the summer okay, but I will probably get the windows film-tinted this year. Cost about

Tinting the windows will help keep the interior cooler, also popping the sun roof on tilt and opening the rear quarter lights will help as it allows air flow through the interior and allow the heat to escape through the sun roof while your parked up

also using the global opening function when you return to the vehicle to open the sun roof and windows to allow the built up hot air to escape, use this option with the remote locking if fitted? so by the time you actually walk back to the car most of the hot air has gone :o

but as you say for the one good day a year that we actually need the AC the expense of maintaining and repairing it is a bit much :huh:
